In weniger als einem Monat startet das International YMCA Reformation Camp. Thomas Göttlicher ist Teil des Mitarbeiterteams.

Lieber Thomas, natürlich interessiert uns zunächst einmal, wer du bist: Wie alt bist du, wo lebst du und was machst du gerade?

Ich lebe seit sechs Jahren zusammen mit meiner Frau im oberfränkischen Bayreuth und gehe mit großen Schritten auf die 35 zu. Seit September arbeite ich für den CVJM Bayern mit dem Aufgabenschwerpunkt „Integration und Geflüchtete“.

Was treibt dich an, im Leitungsteam mitzumachen?

Als erstes natürlich meine Hauptaufgabe als Landessekretär. Als zweites gemeinsam mit meinen Kollegen aus ganz Deutschland zusammenzuarbeiten, das ist eine wichtige Bereicherung.

Was begeistert dich an der Idee des International YMCA Reformation Camp?

Dass es so ein Camp nicht jedes Jahr gibt. Dass hier Welten aufeinandertreffen und man sich arrangieren muss. Das bei so einem Camp die unterschiedlichsten Glaubensformen und Ausdrücke gelebt werden können.

Nenne uns bitte fünf Sachen, die in deinem Reisekoffer für das Camp nicht fehlen dürfen.

Eine Rolle Panzertape – die repariert einfach alles!

Viele Energydrinks, weil man versucht, jeden auf dem Camp kennenzulernen.

Einen Regenschirm, weil man dann weiß, dass es nicht regnen wird.

Einen Klappstuhl, niemand möchte in illustrer Runde dauerhaft auf dem Boden sitzen.

Eine Einwegkamera, so ist man auf besondere Augenblicke fokussiert.

Was hat das International YMCA Reformation Camp für dich mit der Reformation zu tun?

Es ist der Ansatz, verschiedene Menschen aus verschiedenen Kulturen und womöglich auch unterschiedlichen Religionen auf ein Camp zu bekommen. Sich nicht wegen den Unterschieden zu streiten, sondern sich bei den Gemeinsamkeiten zu vereinen. Es bedeutet für mich seine eigene Kultur zu reformieren und sich für andere zu öffnen.

Und zum Abschluss eine Frage getreu unserem Motto „Beyond Limits“. Fällt dir eine Situation ein, in der du grenzenlose Versöhnung erfahren hast? Erzähle uns davon.

Als kleiner Junge hab ich meiner Mutter immer mal wieder ein oder zwei DM-Münzen aus dem Geldbeutel entwendet. Davon kaufte ich mir Süßigkeiten. Nie hat sie etwas davon mitbekommen. Viele Jahre später kamen wir darauf zu sprechen und ich hatte den Eindruck mich für mein Verhalten entschuldigen zu müssen. Meine Mutter nahm es recht locker, nahm mich in den Arm und ich durfte mit dieser Geschichte versöhnt werden.

International Reformation Camp 2017: An interview with Thomas Göttlicher

To celebrate the 500th anniversary of Luther’s Reformation, the YMCA Germany is hosting the International Reformation Camp in Wittenberg, Germany, where Luther originally published his famous theses. Up to 700 friends from partnering countries as well as refugees and natives come together under the motto “Beyond Limits – Grenzenlos” (english: Beyond Limits – Boundless). In less than one month the International Reformation Camp will start and Thomas Göttlicher is part of the organizing committee.

Dear Thomas, first, we are curious about yourself: How old are you? Where do you currently live and what are you up to these days?

For six years now, my wife and I have been living in Bayreuth and I am approaching the thirty-five years.  Since September, I work for the Bavarian YMCA with the focus on “Integration and Refugees”.

What drives you to be part of the committee?

Well firstly of course my job, and secondly the chance to be working with colleagues from all across Germany, a great enrichment.

What excites you about the idea of the International Reformation Camp?

A camp like this doesn’t happen every year. I like how different worlds are meet here and you have to arrange with that, and how such a camp is open for all kinds of faith expressions.

Please name five things your suitcase cannot miss for the International Reformation Camp.

A pack of duct tape – that fixes everything!

A lot of energy drinks, because you want to meet everybody at this Camp.

An umbrella, so you can be sure it won’t rain.

A folding chair, since nobody wants to have good company on the floor.

An one-way camera, to focus on the special moments.

What has the festival got to do with the reformation?

It is an approach to gather people from different cultures and maybe even different religions on one campsite, not to fight about differences but to unite in similarities. It means to reform your own culture and open up for others.

And last but not least a question true to our slogan “Beyond Limits”. Do you recall a situation in which you experienced unlimited reconciliation? Tell us about it.

When I was a little boy I used to take coins from my mother’s wallet. I took the money to buy sweets. She never realized anything. Years later we talked about it and I knew I had to apologize. My mother took it so laid-back, gave me a warm hug and I was able to reconcile with this story.

Mamane trägt eigene Lieder vor und erntet dafür viel Beifall

Während eines Weltmusik-Abends gab er seine selbstgeschriebenen Lieder zum Besten, sang sogar auf Deutsch und bewegte die Herzen seiner Zuhörer. Tosender Applaus und laute „Zugabe“-Rufe drückten die Begeisterung und Verbundenheit mit Mamane und der afrikanischen Musik aus.

Während der Tagung war Mamane immer in Gesprächen mit den unterschiedlichsten Leuten zu sehen – teils auf Deutsch, Englisch oder auch mal Französisch mit Übersetzung. Mamane bringt die deutsche und die nigrische Kultur etwas näher zusammen.

Christine Becker, aus dem Vorbereitungsteam, freut sich auf das International Reformation Camp, das in weniger als sechs Monaten startet. Im Interview berichtet sie, was die Teilnehmenden erwartet.

Liebe Christine, wir wollen dich erst einmal besser kennenlernen. Verrätst du uns, wie alt du bist, wo du lebst und was du gerade machst?

Ich bin 20 Jahre alt und lebe momentan in Nürnberg. Da studiere ich Soziale Arbeit und Theologie, und wenn ich gerade mal nicht in der Hochschule bin, mache ich ganz viel im CVJM.

Was treibt dich an, im Leitungsteam mitzumachen?

Im nächsten Semester mache ich mein Praxissemester beim CVJM Bayern. Da bin ich vor allem für das Camp zuständig. Ich freue mich schon riesig auf die Zeit und ich glaube, es wird eine super Chance für tolle Begegnungen zwischen den unterschiedlichsten Kulturen.

Was darf für dich auf einem Festival nicht fehlen?

Wie schon gesagt, freue ich mich jetzt schon auf die vielen Begegnungen und die Möglichkeit hier einfach Grenzen zu überwinden. Das ist für ein internationales Festival total wichtig.

Aber nicht nur die Begegnung mit anderen Menschen sondern auch die Begegnung mit Gott darf für mich auf so einem Festival nicht fehlen. Ich wünsche mir und ich bete, dass das Camp zu einem Ort wird, wo Menschen Gott kennenlernen und erleben dürfen.

Was hat das International YMCA Reformation Camp für dich mit der Reformation zu tun?

Ich glaube, dass Luther auch – ganz nach unserem Motto „Beyond Limits“ – Grenzen überwunden hat. Er hat sich dafür stark gemacht, den Menschen Gottes Botschaft weiterzugeben und von seiner Gnade zu erzählen, und das obwohl es für ihn alles andere als einfach war.

Ich hoffe, dass das auch auf dem Camp geschehen kann: dass Leute Grenzen überwinden und das, was sie im Camp erleben und erfahren auch in ihren Alltag und nach Hause mitnehmen können.

Und zu guter Letzt eine Frage getreu unserem Motto „Beyond Limits“. Fällt dir eine Situation ein, in der du die grenzenlose Liebe Gottes erfahren hast? Erzähl uns bitte davon.

Wow, das in wenigen Sätzen zu beantworten ist gar nicht so einfach. Immer wieder staune ich in meinem Leben über Gottes grenzenlose Liebe. So geht es mir zum Beispiel oft, wenn ich merke, wie sehr Gott uns im Kleinen und im Großen versorgt.

Als ich beispielsweise letztes Jahr vor der Entscheidung stand, ob ich neben meinem Soziale-Arbeit-Studium noch ein Fernstudium in Theologie machen soll, war ich mit erst mal total unsicher, ob das das Richtige für mich ist. Und ich habe mir echt lange darüber den Kopf zerbrochen, bis ich irgendwann Gott um Rat gefragt habe. Und prompt begegne ich am nächsten Abend Michel Götz im CVJM (wir kannten uns bis dahin noch nicht!). Und dann sagt er zu mir, völlig unvermittelt und ohne mich zu kennen, dass er sich vorstellen könnte, dass ich mal irgendwann was in Richtung Theologie mache. Ich wäre fast vom Stuhl gefallen, als ich das gehört habe.

Das war für mich einer der Momente, wo Gott mir mal wieder ganz deutlich gezeigt hat, dass er keine Grenzen kennt und uns in seiner Liebe immer und überall zur Seite steht.

Christine Becker from the event committee is excited about the International Reformation Camp that will start in less than 6 months. In the following interview she talks about what to expect.

Dear Christine, first we would like to get to know you a little better. Would you tell us how old you are, where you live and what you are presently working.

I am 20 years old and currently living in the German city of Nuremberg where I study Social Work and Theology. And whenever I am free from my studies I join the YMCA.

What motivates you to be part of the steering group?

Next semester I will work for the YMCA of Bavaria, and my main focus will be precisely this Camp. I am really looking forward to this time and I think the camp has great potential to bring  different cultures together.

What is it in your opinion that makes a festival great?

Like I said I am excited to bring people together and about the chance to bridge borders. That is absolutely important to an international festival. But it is not just about meeting other people; the encounter with God is of essential importance for me at a festival. I wish, and I pray, that the camp will be a place where people get to know and experience God.

How do you connect the International YMCA Reformation Camp with the original Reformation?

I believe that Luther tried to bridge borders “Beyond limits”, just like our motto says. He stood up for the gospel and kept on telling people about the grace of God even though it was anything but easy for him.

And that is what I want for the camp to happen: That people cross boundaries and find a way to take home into their lives what they have experienced in the camp.

And as a closure, a question about our slogan: “Beyond Limits”. Can you recall a situation, in which you have experienced the infinite love of God? Tell us about it.

Wow, it isn’t easy to put that into a few sentences. Over and over again I am amazed by God’s endless love for me and my life. I feel this, for example, whenever I realize how much God cares for us in big matters as well as in small ones.

Take last year: I was facing the decision rather or not to pursue a theology study on top of my normal social work degree and I was completely insecure if that would be a fit for me. I really racked my brains abaout it, until I finally asked God for advice. And immediately, literally the next day, I came across Michael Götz from the YMCA who told me straight forward, without knowing me, that he could see me studying something like theology. I almost fell of the chair when I heard that.

This was again such a moment for me, when I realized that God has no limits and that he with his love is with us always and everywhere.
